Product Designer
"An excellent Product Designer should have an affinity and aptitude toward each vertical of the holy trinity of software design: UI, UX and Technology."
Andrej Andonov - Head of Design @ MVP Masters
The Holy Trinity
UI (Visuals)
Most designers at the start of their careers focus heavily on visuals, which is natural. Many enter the field with a background in creative expression—through sketching, painting, photography, or graphic design—activities that aren’t bound by technology or UX constraints.
However, in Product Design, UI cannot exist without considering both technology and UX. That said, strong visuals are just as critical as these other factors.
With over four decades of consumer software evolution, competition in any niche is fierce. Simply being first to market is no longer enough. In today’s landscape, your product must be best in class and capture customers' attention within minutes.
Exceptional visuals play a key role in helping you stand out.
Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of Atomic Design principles
- Designing Custom Components
- Responsive Design
- Wireframing
- Mockups
- Working with already established design systems (contributing to further development of a design system
UX (Product)
A great Product Designer maximizes value by truly understanding the end-user. By stepping into their shoes and analyzing how they solve problems, your aim is to design software that helps them do so more efficiently—reducing cost, friction, time, or resources.
In essence, good software delivers meaningful improvements in users' lives at a small cost.
(With near-zero replication costs, software providers can capture substantial value by offering their solutions at marginal prices.)
Research competitors, develop information architecture, and explore mockups and prototypes.
Responsibilities:
- Product Industry Analysis
- Customer Analysis
- Storyboarding
- Journey-Mapping
- Object-Mapping
- User-Research
- User-Interviews
- A/B Testing
- UX Audits
(Tech)nology
While a Product Designer doesn’t need to know how to code like a Product Engineer, having a basic understanding of software technology is invaluable when translating ideas into features and components.
Understanding what’s feasible and how long development takes reduces friction between clients, designers, and developers, ultimately improving a designer’s workflow and output.
Should have understanding of:
- Web (HTML, CSS, JS)
- How Databases work
- What are APIs and how they work
- Differences between Mobile & Web Software
Note: This last vertical is not a must-have to be hired if you are proficient in the other two, and is something we can help you master,
